". − Since the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam, the common European policies on migration and asylum have been constantly developing. In this context, it is vital that we can rely on objective, reliable and comparable information and data at national and European level so that we can better understand and analyse the migration phenomena and draw up policies or take decisions based on better information. However, the existing data is disparate and in many cases is not reliable, comparable or even up to date. The Thessaloniki European Council approved the establishment of a European Migration Network, which started to operate as a pilot project and was then followed by a preparatory action. I therefore support this proposal, which aims to consolidate the existing structure, making it permanent and giving it an appropriate legal basis by defining its objectives, functions, structure and methods of financing. I agree with the amendments proposed by the rapporteur, in particular the inclusion of asylum in the Network’s name and the extension of its mandate. I particularly agree that the Council’s proposal to only give Parliament a role as observer, without any right to vote, is unacceptable."@en1
