We think that the proposal for a common speed limit on EU motorways may have a positive environmental effect in the sense that speed can be reduced in those Member States which do not have mandatory speed limits on their motorways. However, it is important that no Member State be compelled to disregard subsidiarity by raising the speed limit on its roads.
