"As an avid viewer of that great TV series ‘Deadliest Catch’ I am now a great admirer of fishermen and the work they do. I will be voting in favour of this report because we seriously have to address the waste that goes on, with perfectly good fish being thrown back into the sea because of the workings of the complicated quota system.
Whilst I do not believe that market intervention is the answer here or that quotas should be abandoned, we do need to address seriously this situation.
Our fish stocks are still low. Demand for fish is still growing and therein lies our dilemma. We must preserve our stocks and one way to do this is to eradicate or at least minimise the waste of unwanted by-catches and discards."@en1
