"Mr President, would the French agree to Champagne made from plums? Would the British be pleased if they were permitted to make apricot gin and peach whisky? Of course they would not. That would be tantamount to heresy. Therefore, I am not surprised that the Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, Swedes, Finns and Danes do not want to recognise as vodka some waste products from the manufacture of wine, whisky or gin.
Let us call a spade a spade. Is the European Parliament to be held hostage by powerful lobby groups representing alcohol manufacturers from southern Europe or the United Kingdom? Do we want public opinion in our countries to decide that our Parliament serves as a ‘transmission belt’ for economic lobby groups from various countries and sectors? If we do not want this to happen, let us not agree to this ridiculous, broad definition of vodka."@en1
