"The Slovak Republic, along with other countries, is preparing itself for accession to the Schengen area by implementing a number of security measures. This week, an EU evaluation commission will be visiting the Slovak-Ukrainian border to judge our level of preparedness for securing the future eastern border of the Schengen area. We are also striving to meet the Eurozone accession criteria, since we consider both the Schengen area and the Eurozone to be further steps in EU integration.
Unfortunately, we often come across statements by high-ranking politicians that cast doubt on the enlargement of the Schengen borders. Recently, a statement was made by the Austrian Interior Minister in the context of next year’s UEFA European Football Championship in Vienna. In the daily
he questioned whether it would indeed be feasible to enlarge the Schengen area on 1 January 2008. I believe this was just his personal opinion. Perhaps I need not emphasise that such statements strengthen the hand of the Eurosceptics, and not only in my own country. I therefore urge the European Commission to stick strictly to the agreed accession deadlines for the Schengen area."@en1
