I abstained in the vote on the motion for a resolution on homophobia in Europe. Firstly, this document does not cover the whole of Europe by focusing on Poland, and the title of the resolution is therefore, in my view, too general. Furthermore, I find it simplistic that the fight against homophobia is being treated mainly as a fight against discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation. This confusion between homophobia, which is defined as ‘the fear of one’s fellow man’, and an aversion to homosexuality is a source of misunderstandings.
I am naturally in favour of the fight against all forms of discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation, marriage- and child-related issues apart. These are issues on which political thought needs to develop in line with the demand within society. Nevertheless, I believe that the issue of the unequal treatment of human beings and the fear of our fellow men deserve better than this resolution, even though I agree with many points made in this document."@en1
