"Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, as a Member of Parliament, a frequent flyer and a pilot, I welcome the amendments to Regulation 1592/02 which will make an important contribution to the safety of civil aviation.
The key question of safety is, however, not the only thing at stake here. It is time that the European Union defined its position on airspace more clearly, and by this I mean its relationship with airline customers, aeroplane manufacturers and industry watchdogs. It is important that we contribute to the introduction of uniform standards, because that alone will contribute to the establishment of a single European airspace.
The single market is important, too. If we want to extend the single market, we also need to introduce uniform regulations governing the manufacture and certification of aeroplanes. It is the pilots of ultralight aircraft who are the most exposed to discrepancies in this field. I should like to welcome, in particular, our decision to pay greater attention to leisure pilots. They will be happy to see the regulations becoming standardised and simplified, but not any attempts to introduce additional bureaucracy."@en1
