". Mr President, I should like to thank you and my colleagues for the help and backing I have received. As I warned you in my introduction, the Agency is highly debated and provokes reactions. But I have to assure all of you, in answer to Mrs Roure’s question, that the PPE-DE Group is backing me, and this support will be converted into votes in a few minutes. There will be some delegations who vote against the report for different reasons, mainly questioning the role of the agencies in general, but the PPE-DE Group is well aware of the need to protect fundamental rights. The rapporteur did not have an easy task, as you could hear before, if you listened carefully. But let me underline the fact that there is a Council decision to establish a Fundamental Rights Agency from 2004 extending the mandate of the existing European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia. Parliament, the Commission and the Austrian and Finnish Presidencies tried to do our best to design a mandate which can enable useful, effective and objective work to be done. This is exactly what our societies are expecting from us."@en1
