It has confirmed that the Commission’s proposal, dating back to 1997 is as topical as ever. I am particularly grateful to Mrs Sommer, your rapporteur. Parliament is thus confirming its commitment to inland navigation, and this directive will make it easier to implement a single system for the entire network of European Union waterways. This agreement constitutes an important stage, which is in line with our strategy for harmonising rules at European level, as is recommended by the NAIADE action plan, and it will thus help to increase the competitiveness of inland navigation within the Community.
