"From this Chamber, I should like to salute the Portuguese fishermen. On their national day, they are holding a massive day of protest, in which they are paralysing the fishing fleet in order to call for the adoption of measures needed to safeguard the present and the future of a sector that is vital not only for Portugal but also for the various EU Member States.
The crisis that the fisheries sector has long endured, which is due to aspects such as the commercialisation of fisheries, namely how first sale prices are established, has been exacerbated by the dramatic rise in the price of fuel. This has led to the economic suffocation of the sector and has had deep-rooted social impact, in terms of reduced salaries and increased unemployment. Emergency measures must therefore be taken at Community level in order to ensure revenue for the sector and its workers, which is what the sector’s representatives have long been seeking. This is especially true given that there is a common fisheries policy."@en1
