The partnership agreement between the EC and the Solomon Islands is based on the mandate conferred on the Commission by the Council in June 2001 to negotiate bilateral tuna fishery agreements with ACP countries of the Central West Pacific, with a view to setting up a network of tuna agreements for the Community fleet operating in the Pacific region. I wholeheartedly support the rapporteur’s position in this document, but wish to highlight the importance of Amendment 5, which states that, when the first meeting of the Joint Committee is held, the Commission must inform the Solomon Islands authorities of the attendance of shipowners’ representatives at subsequent meetings of the Joint Committee.
