The issues raised by this report are highly interesting and worthy of far-reaching discussion. I should like to point out, however, that it does not fall within Parliament’s scope – or that of any other European institution, for that matter – to hold this debate in the first place. Acquiring citizenship is an exclusively national issue, a keystone of each Member State’s sovereignty and, in my view, non-negotiable. I disagree with a great many of the premises and conclusions in this report, and accordingly voted against it. I therefore welcome the rejection of the report."@en1
