I support this report because it reaffirms the Council’s conclusions that the EU’s bilateral fisheries relationships should graduate from being access agreements to being ‘partnership agreements’. Such a move will contribute towards responsible fishing in the third country concerned, and ensures fishing opportunities for the EU’s distant fishing fleet. The agreement in question safeguards fishing opportunities for around 52 Community vessels, including five Portuguese surface longliners. I welcome the fact that this agreement is an instrument that will protect fisheries activities and jobs in fishing fleets, and the fact that it upholds the general principles for preserving fisheries resources under the common fisheries policy."@en1
