"Mr President, I echo the comments of my group colleague, Mr Kusstatscher, concerning the many positive aspects of this report, which does a decent job of highlighting the paradox that exists in the developing world when it comes to tourism.
In developing this issue, however, the Commission should bear in mind the principles of yesterday's sustainable tourism debate. The sustainable tourism report was excellent. I would hope that the Commission would view that debate and this one as two sides of the same coin, when looking to come up with a strategy in this area.
I quite agree with the rapporteur that tourism can be a powerful force for good in countries in the developing world. However, I remember well, when I was working in India for six months, how very often the impact of tourism on local communities was negative. I suggest that one of the most useful things that we and the Commission can do to take this forward is to focus on sustainability and perhaps even the production of a code of best practice that companies can aspire to. We can be positive in this field. I look forward to seeing how the Commission will take it forward."@en1
