".
At present, 246 million children in the world work in places that are hazardous for their physical and mental health. Child labour is not a phenomenon associated exclusively with underdeveloped or developing countries. In Eastern Europe and in the Mediterranean, millions of children are exploited in work places. Child labour is a complex issue. It is primarily the result of poverty, inequality of opportunities and a lack of schooling.
I voted in favour of the report before us, which proposes a series of measures in the fight to eliminate child exploitation and child labour: for example, creating a special budget line focusing on the protection of children’s rights in the context of the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights; calling on the Commission to ensure that the EU’s trade policies are consistent with its commitment to protecting and promoting children’s rights; and looking into the possibility of introducing a scheme for the labelling of goods imported into the EU to attest that they have been produced without the use of child labour."@en1
