"Mr Barroso, Commissioners, you have also had the vote of Mr Fatuzzo of the Pensioners’ Party, within the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats. I would like to call on President Barroso – who I am told is 48 years old and therefore very young – precisely because of his youth, to take seriously – as I am sure he will and as young people usually do – the fate and the problems of old people throughout Europe. Large numbers of the elderly, in fact, are in very difficult financial situations, since many of them have pensions which are hardly sufficient to pay for a glass of water and a slice of bread. In my opinion, coming to the aid of needy elderly people throughout Europe is one of the goals which we would be very happy to see achieved over these next five years."@en1
