". – As announced in the Internal Market Strategy: Priorities 2003-2006, the Commission is presently analysing whether there is scope for improving the efficiency and performance of the water sector. This analysis focuses in particular on how the current competition and internal market rules should be applied to this sector. The Commission does not wish to rule any options out at this stage, including the possibility of further legislative measures. As part of its fact-finding, the Commission has sent detailed questionnaires to current and future Member States with a view to gathering information on the legal and administrative rules and requirements within which the water sector operates. The Commission has also held informal discussions with regional and local authorities, business and citizens' organisations, and enterprises involved in the sector. The analysis is still ongoing, so it is too early to draw conclusions. Once the analysis is complete, the Commission will, of course, present its findings and set out its views on any possible additional steps to be taken, in full respect of Treaty guarantees for services of general economic interest and of environmental provisions."@en1
