".
Like my group, I voted in favour of the motion for a resolution on structurally disadvantaged regions.
The enlargement of the ΕU with 10 new members and the stagnation of the Community budget at the same levels are giving rise to serious concerns about Union action in island regions, mountain regions and regions with a low population density in the Union. It is important to maintain and strengthen ‘cohesion policy’ and not to create a programming and financing split and inconsistency. The political principle of ‘solidarity’ must be fully respected in order to reduce the structural disadvantages of these regions. The facility to increase funding to disadvantaged regions, depending on the extent of their handicaps, is particularly important.
Finally, I wish to emphasise the urgent need to stop soil erosion in island areas, such as the Aegean, with an extensive drywall network conservation programme."@en1
