"Mr President, I have taken the floor to ask the Presidency to give a response on the issue raised yesterday by Mr Turco. Over 10% of the Members of Parliament tabled a motion for a resolution condemning the serious, systematic violation of fundamental democratic rights in my country, Italy. The motion was rejected by our internal bureaucratic system and retabled by 10% of the Members of Parliament. Now, I strongly urge the Conference of Presidents to give a political response to the matter this time. This is not, of course, just a matter of the people – as Mr Turco informed us – who have just started to refuse liquids or the people who have been on a hunger strike and abstaining from liquids for some days, such as Marco Pannella. This is not a form of blackmail but a non-violent measure seeking to ensure that authorities – in this case the Italian institutions – observe their own laws. We call for the motion to be brought before Parliament and for there, at least, to be a political discussion on the matter. We will, of course, be happy to explain the matter to all the Members, to describe how the Constitution of a State of the European Union has been continuously flouted, disregarded and violated for over a year now as regards the membership of the Italian Chamber of Deputies."@en1
