lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, I support economic cooperation within the European Union. It is important if the internal market, and more particularly the single currency, is to operate effectively. From an Irish perspective the stability programme is central to the budgetary process. A most recently updated programme adopted last December was framed against a prospect of strong but moderate economic growth and in the medium to long-term the Government intends to continue to run significant budgetary surpluses reflecting economic good sense and our obligations under the Stability and Growth Pact. Needless to say, I fully support the policies being pursued by our Minister for Finance. We believe that government debt in Ireland will be reduced to around 25% of GDP by the year 2003. We are allocating at least 1% of GDP annually to build up the pension reserve fund so as to provide for our ageing population. In relation to price inflation, which is one of the issues addressed in the Council’s recommendation to Ireland, it is important that we are clear on the following key statistics: the latest figures show that inflation as measured by the harmonised European index has fallen from 6% last November to 3.9% this year. Our inflation rate is now lower than that in a number of other EU Member States. In conclusion, as regards the future of Ireland within the European Union, we are fully committed to the operation of the internal market and to the single currency. We want to make both these key projects a real success within the Union, and we support enlargement. I am actively canvassing for a yes-vote in the referendum which I hope will be carried."@en1
