Mr President, I asked to speak out of turn because I feel that I have to set the record straight. Europe is based on principles of freedom, justice and respect for human rights and it is not entitled to discounts either internally or with its negotiating partners, still less for commercial or economic reasons. I should therefore like to make it clear that, as far as Turkey’s candidature is concerned, the criteria have been laid down quite clearly. Negotiations on Turkey’s candidature will only commence once we feel that it meets the Copenhagen criteria."@en1
