"Mr President, I voted for Mrs Lulling’s report on beer imports into Finland, but I have to say that I do not agree with these excise duties. For my part, I would like there to be a free market. I remember when, at the age of about 21, I worked as part of the crew of a ship which travelled between New York and the Bahamas: whenever I left the ship and ventured into New York City I was allowed to take two bottles of whisky with me, which, as I boarded the bus
would regularly be bought from me at three times the price, for whisky was much more expensive in New York. Therefore, this trade between one State and another which was caused by different levels of duties was only natural. If we want to avoid it, we must remove all the excise duties in the European Union."@en1
