"Mr President, firstly, I would like to give my thanks to the rapporteur for this lengthy piece of work, and I am happy to welcome a more balanced text. Mr President, I can welcome any report which aims to simplify and streamline European regulation, but especially a report around these important issues. However, I do feel that the Commission should do more to tackle the challenges facing farmers, and in particular the mandatory labelling changes for free—range egg producers affected by outbreaks of avian influenza. These producers have, through no fault of their own, been placed at a financial disadvantage given the need to house birds in high-risk areas. These farmers are worried that such labelling moves may affect the importance of free—range status, devaluing not only their product in the long term, but also their business. The Commission must do more to protect this important industry in exceptional times. I would also like to raise the concerns of arable farmers in my constituency, who are horrified at the potential outright ban of the active substance glyphosate. Such a ban would increase costs for growers and limit the efficiency of their businesses in what are already difficult times. And I would call upon the Parliament, and in particular the Commission, to act on sound science and not scare tactics."@en1
