"Madam President, the first paragraph of this resolution reaffirms the EU’s continued support for the UN Human Rights Council. Unfortunately, that in itself is the crucial point here. With the wave of nativism and nationalism we are seeing, now is our time to defend and strengthen our commitment to international law and cooperation. Many so—called democracies are trampling over human rights: India in occupied Kashmir; Israel in occupied Palestine, for example. Authoritarian leaders across the world – be they Putin, Erdoğan, Trump or others – are being emboldened to violate human rights and cause pain and suffering to marginalised and minority communities. It is up to us, to all true democrats, to mobilise and defend our universal values. Too often, the Human Rights Council is used by governments for their own interests. We need to strengthen our investment in human rights institutions like the Council and work to strengthen them from both the inside and the outside. We need to invest more in human rights NGOs and civil society and invest in education for true democratic values to raise a new generation of human rights defenders."@en1
