"Mr President, let us remember that there was a fundamental flaw in European law. Semi-automatic firearms with a pin through the barrel were able to be bought and sold without permission. The pins were taken out of the barrel and the guns were used to kill people in Paris. Over 30 of the same guns were found in the United Kingdom. The law needed to be changed. Some people have suggested that this law will take away freedoms for legal owners: this is not true. Hunters, collectors, museums, re-enactors, reservists and target shooters will be able to carry on with their sports and hobbies, both now and in the future, provided their Member States agree. That is thanks to the work of this Parliament. We live at a time of fake news. Stop telling people half truths about what this report does. This report addresses fundamental issues to protect our security, especially about those poorly deactivated firearms. It makes it easier for countries across Europe to work together against terrorism but it also respects the rights of legal owners to get on with their hobbies, their pastimes and their sports – and I would like to thank all those legal owners who have helped us with this work. Thank you, colleagues. I hope the report is passed and thank you for your support."@en1
