"Mr President, we came here this week to Strasbourg in the expectation that the British Government was set to trigger Article 50, and yet again we see that there is a delay, as the lack of leadership, the lack of direction among the British Government, again becomes apparent – and the people who, once again, are left to suffer the results are those very people from countries who voted to remain part of the EU.
The places we have seen leadership come from are Scotland, where Nicola Sturgeon has shown Theresa May to be the failure in politics that she is, and the North of Ireland, where 70% of the people, when given the opportunity, voted for parties that supported the Remain campaign in the referendum.
We need to ensure that the North of Ireland is secured with special status. We did not allow, in the Irish border region, the British military at its height to force a closure of the Irish border. We will not allow the EU institutions to do so now. We need Europe to stand with the people in the North of Ireland."@en1
