"Madam President, a number of members yesterday were questioning what the British Prime Minister had meant when she said she wanted some continuing aspects of the Customs Union to remain in force. Actually if you read her words it was pretty clear. We are very determined – she is very determined – to leave the common commercial policy and to have the freedom to negotiate bilateral trade deals with America and Australia and India and China and so on, but there may be technical aspects of the Customs Union which would survive if they were in the interests of all parties – for example, the rules that obviate the need for veterinary checks at every border. If all sides wanted those things to continue then of course it would be silly to make an ideological point out of sacrificing pragmatism to dogma. As I have said on many occasions in this Chamber you will be losing a bad tenant, but I hope you will be gaining a good neighbour."@en1
