"I supported this report today as I had done at committee level. Although the Regulation was a major breakthrough in pushing for paediatric medicine research 10 years ago, today there are loopholes which need to be addressed, as these are preventing development in research and jeopardising life chances. Children are among the most vulnerable members of our society and we must act accordingly to improve their quality of life.
With cross-party support, this resolution is pushing for an end to deferred investment in paediatric medical research and to ensure that regulatory changes close those loopholes.
Although the Commission makes the point that children’s health is very important in their work, it does not appear to be a top priority. Our future is bleaker when theirs is at risk. The Commission is not acting quickly enough upon the public’s demands and those of their elected representatives.
However, an area this current motion could have pushed further on concerns increased transparency in development and medical research processes, not just with regard to clinical results.
I would encourage all of my constituents and interest groups in Ireland to submit their experiences to the Commission before the consultation deadline on the 2017 Report on the Paediatric Regulation"@en1
