"Mr President, I welcome the news that Dublin transfers to Greece will resume from March and that there has been a reduction in attempts to cross the Aegean Sea. This sends a positive signal that the system can work, under the rules will be adhered to fairly. Every effort should be made to save lives, create stability in conflict regions, and assist Member States overwhelmed by the challenges they face. But many in this Parliament still believe that the solution lies in more forms of legal migration and binding quotas. I cannot support any relocation scheme that forces Member States to take an allotted number of persons. Any discussion of sanctions against Member States can only weaken European cooperation and spread resentment. Instead, Member States need to continue to commit more resources and aid to countries in the Middle East. We need efficient asylum processing and expedient returns. The one-for-one approach of the EU-Turkey deal is neither a sustainable nor fair solution. Instead, we need to work towards effective and fair cooperation with third countries."@en1
