"Madam President, as an Irish MEP, the representation of agricultural interests is one which lies at the forefront of my agenda. Thus I chose to vote in favour of this report given the rapporteur’s efforts to identify tools which will help to lessen price volatility in this sector. In the light of economic, political and natural factors which often prove to be outside our control, I welcome renewed efforts to regulate said volatility in this domain. In doing so we may take a positive step towards the modernisation of existing CAP tools. I also welcome this report’s appraisal of the often significant gap between supply and demand in the agricultural market. I would therefore hope that the recommendations of this report will continue to place rural development as a priority on our agenda, thus promoting greater stability in this sphere. Having met, in recent weeks, many farmers in my constituency who have suffered unbelievably due to volatility in tillage, dairy and beef, any measures that can reduce volatility and give them certainty as regards income will be most welcome and they will welcome it too."@en1
