"Madam President, Mr Brok’s report represents an important and essential evaluation of foreign and security policy within the European Union. In line with Mr Brok’s views, I would consider the safeguarding of EU interests and values to be an important concern in light of the extent and nature of the existing challenges which we face in international affairs. Against a backdrop of growing security challenges, the debate regarding the future of European defence cooperation is increasingly pertinent.
In fact, 66% of Irish citizens would like to see greater EU engagement in matters of security and defence policy, according to a new Eurobarometer survey of the European Parliament on perceptions and expectations. Nevertheless, military expenditure was 0.4% of Ireland’s GDP in 2015. I share and appreciate the goal of ensuring greater safety for EU citizens and reiterate that, during the evolution of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy, our EU counterparts have always fully respected Ireland’s sovereignty, independence and neutrality. Because of that neutrality, we did not support all the amendments and abstained in the final vote."@en1
