"Madam President, in line with the EPP, I voted in favour of this report in its final version, given the report’s balanced consideration of the state of human rights and democracy in the EU and beyond. Having said that, my colleagues and I from Ireland did abstain or vote against some of the amendments.
I remain alarmed by continuing incidents of violence and persecution, intolerance, and discrimination towards minorities, and ongoing trends of migration and displacement. However, the advancement of democracy, universality and indivisibility of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the rule of law continue to define our policy in this field. Thus we may hope that the shared challenges which we face in this year may be handled in the spirit of bilateral engagement and cooperation as we continue to advance towards the improvement of human rights. I must say that, hopefully, those who continuously criticise the European Union and the European Parliament might give us credit for the ongoing work we are doing continuously, day in day out, in promoting human rights right across the globe."@en1
