"Today I voted against the compulsory opening-up of railway contracts across Europe to private sector operators, as the new laws do not provide protection for rail workers’ terms and conditions when services are contracted out and also do not ensure good staffing standards on privately-run services.
The proposed Directive is a highly ideological and unjustified restriction of the prerogative of Member States to organise and run their railways. In addition, UK trade unions and the ETF have always rejected market opening for so-called commercial rail passenger services, arguing that open access competition invites cherry—picking and jeopardises a good overall network offer of rail passenger services."@en1
