"Mr President, as we discuss human rights, by virtue of my own Romany Gypsy heritage, I wish to highlight the issues facing our Roma Gypsy and Traveller communities. Anti-Gypsyism is a worrying global trend and has even been described to me by a leading human rights campaigner as the last acceptable face of racism today. The time has come to act beyond the usual platitudes and lip service; real action must be taken at Member State level. Every week, news reports highlight increasing attacks against our RGT communities, including murders taking place only last month. That is how serious the issue has become.
In my country, besides access to health care and education, there are many other issues facing our Gypsy and Traveller communities, not least the distinct shortage of both permanent and temporary stopping sites and a need for local authorities to live up to their legal obligations in this regard. Last year’s wicked changes to planning legislation, legally redefining the legal personality of a Traveller, would not have been allowed to happen to any other ethnic minority. Our government should hold their heads in shame."@en1
