"Mr President, I welcome this evaluation of the status of fundamental rights in the European Union. Based on the principles of compromise and subsidiarity and identifying the protection of fundamental rights and dignity as a priority, I am pleased to support the rapporteur’s findings. In establishing a more definitive framework in this sphere, we may hope that the vast range of rights which were identified will continue to be advanced. I also greatly appreciate Mr Nagy’s renewed efforts to recognise the promotion of rights for minorities as a keystone for future policy in this area. I would also like to thank our President, Mr Schulz, for referring to the fundamental rights of a European and Irish citizen in Parliament yesterday evening when he called on the Egyptian authorities to release Ibrahim Halawa, who is celebrating his 21st birthday today in an Egyptian prison, without trial for four years for an offence he allegedly committed when he was a minor. So hopefully the Egyptian authorities will listen more to the Irish authorities, to the Department of Foreign Affairs, and to Mr Schulz, our President."@en1
