"I voted in favour of this regulation on establishing new rules for fishing in the North-East Atlantic. When fish stocks on the continental shelf started declining at the end of the 1980s due to overfishing and unsustainable practices, the fishing industry started targeting deep-sea species. The development of industrial fisheries in the EU over the last four decades led to a critical stock depletion and destruction of marine habitat.
The new regulation strengthens the protection of deep-sea habitats by setting stricter conditions on deep-sea fisheries. The cornerstone measure is the ban on bottom trawling fisheries below 800 metres in EU waters, which entails an important precedent worldwide. I was also particularly happy to support a new effort to ensure the collection of scientific data; 20% of vessels will now be required to have a scientific observer on board."@en1
