"Madam President, I would like to thank the Commissioners for being with us here today. I welcome this ‘Clean Energy for All’ package, and I am glad it is called clean rather than green because I want to concentrate on the word clean. I am not talking about clean in terms of radical reductions in carbon, although I know that is the main focus for most people today, and that is very important. I am talking as the recent rapporteur for the National Emission Ceilings Directive about being clean of pollutants other than carbon – that is NOx, PM, etc. I particularly welcome the focus of this package on consumers, which is important as it is ultimately by adapting consumption patterns in energy and much more generally in the way we live that we can truly transition to a clean, low-carbon economy rather than a low-energy one. I would like to see very specific measures to tackle the problems associated with outdated carbon-heavy district heating schemes in some parts of the EU. On the theme of changing consumption patterns, we must look at ways of dealing with the issue of individual household log-burning – currently being overlooked as a major health issue because of our focus on diesel transport. I know these are fairly minor issues this morning, but I think that they should be considered."@en1
