"This is an extremely important fund, and in the light of the disastrous flooding which plagued central Europe this summer, and as a concern which Irish people know only too well, I supported this report as an instrument which would enable the EU to respond to major natural disasters more effectively, and indeed efficiently. Such a development thus demonstrates the innate sense of solidarity which will continue to define our relationship with both current and accession states of the European Union and show citizens that we do care about them, and that when they are in dire need the European Union is prepared to do its very best to help them. This is what the Solidarity Fund is all about, and in my constituency we have benefited from it on a number of occasions. We may need to benefit from it again – hopefully not, but I think we probably will because of the nature of the various climatic disasters which are occurring."@en1
