"Mr President, EU accession to the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women would again emphasise our clear condemnation of gender inequality. By setting legally binding standards in this sphere, we would hope to prevent gender-based violence, protect victims, identify and punish perpetrators and raise awareness across the EU. In the light of considerable disparities across the EU, in both the reporting and handling of reports of violence against women, I believe it to be essential that we speed up negotiations and the signing of this Convention. The implementation and coordination of more proactive policies would therefore represent a marked step towards the protection of human rights for all. In conclusion, I would like to compliment the rapporteurs, my colleagues Anna Maria Corazza Bildt and Barbara Matera, for their good work and I look forward to the day when motions like this will not be necessary and when women do not suffer violence as they are unfortunately continuing to do."@en1
