"Mr President, I supported the proposal to freeze Turkey’s talks on joining the EU, on the basis that the need to protect human rights and uphold democratic values is imperative. Ireland has always been a strong supporter of human rights, which makes the situation in Turkey a great concern for my country. The EU must send an unequivocal message that democratic values, due process and free speech are essential preconditions for EU membership, and while they are absent in Turkey it makes sense to freeze talks. More than 110 000 people, in academia, the military and the legal sector, have been dismissed from their posts as part of a government crackdown in Turkey since the attempted coup. Not to take a stance would be to undermine the EU’s credibility as a strong global player. Building on this, it is my belief that we must overcome the challenges of this watershed moment in our relations with Turkey by continuing to encourage Turkey’s advancement towards higher standards of democracy and human rights. Europe needs to lead by example and we are happy to continue to engage with Turkey. However, we must also take a strong stance on continued breaches of human rights."@en1
