"Mr President, certainly Jordan is a beleaguered state struggling in a difficult neighbourhood. I wonder though whether we shouldn’t look at the origins of a lot of the problems in that region. It is a hundred years since the Sykes—Picot Agreement and the creation of states which were effectively synthetic. Reality has imposed itself in Iraq in the sense that there is now, to all intents and purposes, an autonomous Kurdish entity, and something very similar is happening in Syria. How long before the recognition of the world follows the lines on the ground? It is bizarre that we remain wedded to this idea that multi-ethnic states must be superior to what people democratically choose for themselves on the ground."@en1
