"I abstained on the report on the implementation of the common security and defence policy. I believe there were many positive elements to the report and I do agree with the assertion that the EU faces new threats which are hybrid and often cross borders. As well as that, I do agree that the European security environment has deteriorated considerably over the past few years and has become more fluid and more complex. Nevertheless, I felt that the report went too far in terms of harmonising security and defence policy at EU level. For example, I am not in favour of requiring Member States to allocate 2% of their GDP towards defence spending. Again, I believe this should be a decision taken at Member State level. However, I was in favour of some aspects: for example, I supported the call for strong preventive policies based on comprehensive deradicalisation programmes to be used against all forms of extremism."@en1
