"Along with the majority of MEPs, I supported this report on the emission of certain atmospheric pollutants which was agreed on with the Council. Air pollution a major health risk in the EU that causes more than 400 000 premature deaths each year. It is a cross-border threat that should be tackled at the European level. This Directive aims to achieve this by: updating reduction targets for 2020 based on the current NEC Directive for certain pollutants; new reduction targets for 2030 for the same pollutants. It is hoped that such measures will avoid tens of thousands of premature deaths annually and improve the quality of the environment. Meeting the new targets will cut the negative health effects of pollution by half by 2030. Tackling air pollution also brings economic benefits to society, since the economic cost of the health impacts of air pollution is estimated at 3-9% of GDP. I would like to point out that methane will not be part of this directive as was originally planned by the EP it will be dealt with under separate legislation."@en1
