"Mr President, it seems that the UK Government is not only hell-bent on making Britain the dirty man of Europe again, but also lowering ambition for the rest of Europe. Our British Government has been taken to court several times now by ClientEarth for not meeting the current requirements on air pollution, specifically nitrogen dioxide, in the existing National Emission Ceilings Directive. In my constituency, the government has failed to create a clean air zone in Bristol, so air pollution will continue to cause at least 300 premature deaths every year within the city. It has been left to local campaigners to try to protect the people of Bristol from breathing dirty air. Parliament had a chance today to protect present and future generations, but the positive targets and measures in the Environment Committee report have been watered down to such a degree that supporting it would have meant condoning a policy of continued air pollution and the health damage it causes."@en1
