"Mr President, I feel that this report rather neatly demonstrates the difference between internationalism and supranationalism. Internationalism, the cooperation among sovereign countries, is impossible to argue with, and the idea that tax authorities should share information in order to crack down on illegal behaviour on tax evasion is uncontroversial. But every time this Parliament gets its hands on the subject it always starts inserting a different agenda to do with tax harmonisation and with treating jurisdictions with lower tax, or tax havens as they are invariably called here, as being intrinsically illicit rather than being, as they are, a spur to the rest of us to keep tax rates within a manageable level. By all means, let us have cooperation among tax authorities. Let us make it global rather than just continental and let us not leave it to the same bumbling Brussels institutions that gave us the common agricultural policy, the common fisheries policy, Schengen, the euro and all the rest of it. That is the difference between internationalism and supranationalism."@en1
