"I agree that a reduction in trans fats is a good thing for general public health, however I do not agree with the approach taken in this resolution. The inflexible approach it takes is a mandatory limit on trans fatty acids, which risks passing on significant price increases to consumers. I am also concerned that such a one-track approach will not help reduce trans fatty intake in the longer term. Better labelling, self-regulation and voluntary agreements between industry and governments have all seen significant improvements in trans-fat levels in a number of Member States. We need to continue to do more work in this area and should not just reject all the progress of the last few years in these areas. For these reasons I voted against this motion."@en1
