"Madam President, the interesting thing about coming in here today was that this particularly affects Ireland. It is no secret that it is a cornerstone of our economic policy for successive governments. Stone, though, is a bit of a strong word for it, because that stone is starting to be worn away. When I came in here today I was expecting to see members of our government – MEPs from that party – coming in here to defend it, because it is a cornerstone of their policy. It was interesting to hear the Commissioner say at the beginning that we have a more favourable political environment. Well, Ireland and Irish people are seen as supportive of the EU project. It’s strange, because a Member of the EPP has said that if you go ahead any further with this, they will get Ireland to pull out of the EU. So it’s interesting you say it is a more political favourable environment. I was wondering, until the President turned up, had we already Irexited, because none of them were here."@en1
