"Mr President, Parliament wants to reverse cuts to the EU budget and spend even more taxpayers’ money on the European Union, but this is not rocket science, this is not like national budgets where cuts mean less money spent on services that actually matter and where austerity means harming the citizens of a country. What we are actually talking about here is victimless cuts. We have a chance to cut nonsense spending. We have proposed savings of three billion euro a year across 33 amendments, not one of which would harm the citizens of Europe one iota.
Scrap the funding for pan-European political parties, scrap the funding for pan-European political foundations. Let us stop sending taxpayers’ money to Turkey to help it join the European Union. How about cutting our own pay and expenses here? Let us cut the budget for the ego trip that is the EU Jean Monnet Professors programme, and stop funding the propagandist House of History for which costs are still spiralling out of control and it has not even opened yet. We are proposing victimless cuts here but I am predicting that not one of them is going to pass."@en1
