"As a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and coming from a small island nation, this is a very important topic for me. I attended the debate here last night and I would like to commend both the rapporteur, Mr Gyürk, and Commissioner Cañete for their help in developing a very sensible strategy on liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the European Union. Obviously the Russian developments, especially in Ukraine, woke us all up to how unreliable a partner it was and it is obviously not sensible to be depending on a partner like Russia for the majority of our gas. Also, of course, the availability of LNG means that we should avail of that opportunity as well to bring down prices and to improve security. Of course, where we are concerned in Ireland, the fact now that the United Kingdom will be leaving the European Union; it is not sensible that we should be largely dependent on a connector from the United Kingdom. So these measures and the development of LNG in Shannon in Ireland would be of major importance and I thank the Commission particularly for their support of that."@en1
