"Iran’s nuclear deal with the international community was a welcome step in de-escalating what could have turned into a dangerous conflict. The agreement has the potential to bring further stability to the region if all sides cooperate with the long-term interests of the region’s peoples in mind. This means that the EU and its Member States must put human rights at the core of the process, and engage in dialogue with Iran in order to bring about clear improvements in human rights conditions and an end to gross violations in Iran, including imprisonment of activists and human rights defenders, executions of minors, the systematic use of torture, and tolerance of gender-based violence. This must come about with clear human rights impact assessments, benchmarks and a monitoring framework, and full cooperation with UN mechanisms. Business and economic cooperation must go hand in hand with progress on human rights. I voted in favour of this report, while actively working to include in it more compelling language on human rights with a clearer assessment of the current human rights situation, by supporting the amendments brought to the Plenary. The EEAS must see this report as a mandate to engage Iran on these issues."@en1
